Citing pressure from new Republican Gov. John Kasich, Ohio Superintendent of Public Instruction Deborah Delisle has announced that she will resign on April 30.

In her resignation letter to the State Board of Education, which hired her two and a half years ago, Ms. Delisle wrote that two of Gov. Kasich’s staff members made it known to her that her tenure was coming to an end.

When asked about the letter, the governor’s spokeswoman Connie Wehrkamp said: “It is safe to say that it is absolutely critical to have someone in that position who shares Gov. Kasich’s views on education.” Gov. Kasich has promised big changes in Ohio’s schools, including limiting teachers’ collective bargaining rights.
