Staffing Contracts

A new report explains some of the common provisions found in multiyear contracts between school districts and teachers.

Published last month by Education Sector, a Washington-based research group, the report provides a side by side comparison of “traditional” and “thin” teachers’ contracts, the latter referring to contracts that are silent on many of the issues normally found in traditional contracts. The traditional contract is illustrated through a 2006 bargaining agreement between the San Diego school district and the San Diego Education Association. As an example of a thin contract, the report includes an early contract used by Green Dot Public Schools, a high school charter school network in Los Angeles.

A version of this article appeared in the April 07, 2010 edition of Education Week as Staffing Contracts
