Open Doors Report

The number of U.S. students studying abroad rose by almost 9 percent between the 2005-06 and 2006-07 school years to a total of about 220,000, and the increase was fueled, in large part, by a 38 percent increase in enrollment in programs in China, says a reportRequires Adobe Acrobat Reader from the Institute of International Education, a New York City-based nonprofit that promotes international education and cross-cultural learning.

The report also found that newly enrolled international students at colleges and universities in the United States increased by 10 percent during the same time period, totaling more than 582,000.

The results for the annual census are based on more than 2,800 surveys that were sent to colleges and universities.
