60 Minutes of Daily Exercise Recommended For Children

School-age children should exercise at least 60 minutes a day, a national panel of experts says in the June issue of The Journal of Pediatrics.

The panel reviewed 850 studies that examined the outcome of physical activity by 6- to 18-year-olds, and it found strong evidence that such activity improves cardiovascular health as well as muscular strength and endurance. It also found evidence that school-based physical education may offer “small positive gains in academic performance,” and that physical activity and fitness may influence concentration, memory, and cognitive performance.
