The National Education Association has announced that Don Cameron will succeed Terry Herndon as executive director of the 1.7-million-member teachers' organization.
Mr. Cameron, 45, is now the assistant executive director of the nea He was chosen by the organization's nine-member executive committee. Mr. Herndon's resignation becomes effective May 31.
Prior to joining the nea in 1979, Mr. Cameron spent three years as the executive director of nea's state affiliate in Florida. He began his career in education as a history teacher in Michigan.
William B. Royster, president-elect of the American Association of School Administrators, has been fired from his position as superintendent of Anderson, S.C., School District Five.
The nine-member Anderson school board announced Mr. Royster's dismissal, which is effective immediately, without comment at a meeting last month.
Five new members of the board took office at the meeting, shortly before Mr. Royster was voted out of his job. Mr. Royster, who had held the position since 1967, has reportedly turned the matter over to his lawyer.
