We’ve got quite a traffic jam on our hands when it comes to the Every Student Succeeds Act.
But take heart, and have no fear: We’ve been closely following the progress of the ESSA plans from the 50 states and the District of Columbia, and we’ve got a map to show you what that progress is:

And in case you’re having tech troubles with that map, here are the numbers as of this week:
- Fourteen states and the District of Columbia, all from the first batch of states that submitted plans last spring, have had their ESSA plans approved by U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos.
- Two states from that first batch are still waiting for the green light: Colorado and DeVos’ home state of Michigan.
- Thirty-two states have submitted their plans in the second batch—the deadline for that second round was Sept. 18.
- Two states, Alabama and South Carolina, have yet to submit their plans—the Palmetto State got an extension to file its plan thanks to Hurricane Irma.
