UPDATED: The National Board for Education Sciences meeting has been rescheduled for Nov. 16. There is no new agenda available.

Once bitten, twice shy.

Though the federal government now appears less likely to shut down this week over budget disagreements, the National Board for Education Sciences today cancelled its quarterly meeting planned for Oct. 2. It will be rescheduled sometime in November.

NBES, the advisory board for the Institute of Education Sciences, the research arm of the U.S. Department of Education, had to cancel its fall meeting without notice in 2013 because of the last government shutdown, and Kenann McKenzie-Thompson, executive director, said the board was taking no chances this time: “Fingers crossed that there is no shut down, but at least members are not waiting and wondering.”

In November, the board is expected to cover the same topics as it was this week, including IES’ standards and review process, and planning for the National Center for Education Statistics. And of course, members are likely to be planning how to respond to the latest in years of budget cuts proposed for IES.
