Advocates for low-income families and minority students are suing California over its school finance system, claiming the funding process is unconstitutional and inequitable.
The lawsuit, filed last month, asks a judge to order state lawmakers to devise a new system. It also seeks more-robust tracking of how public education money is spent, and it asks the state to ensure effective teachers are available to all students.
Last spring, several school districts, parents, and groups, including the California School Boards Association, sued the state on similar grounds. The lawsuits come as a recession has forced the state to make spending cuts.
