It remains all too common that if you’re a black, Hispanic, or a low-income student, your school may not give you the same shot at taking advanced courses as your white, more affluent peers. You aren’t as likely to have teachers with long track records of effectively teaching students. And you are more likely to face harsher discipline measures if you make a mistake. While most K-12 leaders acknowledge that these inequities exist in their schools, many struggle to confront the practices that perpetuate them, must less root them out completely. In this report, Education Week takes a close look at some schools and districts that are engaging in the hard work of embracing the goals of equity and turning them into action steps that are benefitting students directly.
