On Dec. 14, six members of the faculty and 20 1st graders at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Conn., were killed at the hands of a violent gunman intent on doing harm.

During an interfaith vigil at the Newtown High School two days later, President Barack Obama quoted scripture and tried to console the town and its families. He highlighted the bravery of the staff who tried to safeguard their young charges, with some sacrificing their lives in the process.

“We know that there were other teachers who barricaded themselves inside classrooms, and kept steady through it all, and reassured their students by saying ‘Wait for the good guys, they’re coming,’ the President said. “‘Show me your smile’.”

Here are some of those smiles.
