Mo’ne Davis Named Sports Illustrated Kids' Sports Kid of the Year

Mo’ne Davis made history earlier this year by becoming the first Little Leaguer to ever grace the cover of Sports Illustrated.

This week, she’s on the cover of the magazine’s “kids” edition, having been named the 2014 Sports Illustrated Kids Sports Kid of the Year.

First lady Michelle Obama broke the news Monday morning:

In her team’s first Little League World Series game, Mo’ne became the first girl to throw a shutout in the event’s history, striking out eight while allowing just two hits.

“It was nerve-racking, but I kept cool,” she told SI Kids’ Christina Tapper. “My team told me, ‘Go out and do what you do and we’ll back you up.’ They did. But me getting a shutout? I was a little shocked. I did it before, but this was a bigger stage.”

Though her squad fell one game short of the U.S. championship game, Mo’ne clearly left a lasting impression upon sports fans.

“The 5'4" flamethrower did more than just play a boy’s game,” Tapper wrote. “She dominated it, showing the nation that a girl can throw heat, too. She also inspired countless kids to dream big. “

To accompany Mo’ne’s cover story, SI Kids also produced a video about her monumental year:

“Mo’ne’s achievements rank among the finest by any athlete at any level this year,” said SI Kids managing editor Mark Bechtel in a statement. “She reminded us all—adults included—that there are no limits to what we can accomplish.”
