Look for some Florida sunshine in the Time and Learning blog.
Your new blogger will be writing from the Miami area. I’m Marva Hinton, and I’m excited to explore issues of extended learning with you. I’ve been working as a reporter for more than 15 years, but my interest in education goes back even further. My mom and two of my aunts were teachers, so I grew up hearing about their challenges and successes in the classroom.
Through this blog, I hope to take a deep dive into programs and initiatives aimed at extending and reconfiguring instructional time in ways that better promote student learning. I want to look at why administrators are considering block scheduling and longer school days and/or year-round schooling as possible means to improve education outcomes. And, I’m also interested in what’s working to keep students engaged before and after school as well as in the summer. I plan to tackle how schools can best help students take advantage of these educational opportunities inside and outside of school while also making sure that kids still have plenty of time to be kids.
But I can’t do it alone. I hope you will share your tips and suggestions. I want to hear from parents and educators. Please provide feedback on the blog or through social media. You can follow me on Twitter @MarvaAHinton.
