The American Education Research Association has launched one of the first open-access online journal on education and learning.
AERA Open is intended to provide free online access to research studies, with a short turnaround time from when the study is accepted. The journal hopes to pull in research from a broad array of fields, from developmental psychology to economics and neuroscience.
Interestingly, the journal has also pledged to accept studies that attempt to repeat previous research and those that do not find positive results—two big holes in the current publication field, which make it harder for practitioners to draw accurate lessons from the studies.
Here’s Mark Warschauer, the editor in chief of the new journal, talking about how it will work:
The journal is soliciting its first articles now, so it remains to be seen how its new format will play out. I will be interested to see how this journal fills in some of the gaps in existing education research.
