Guidelines for Commentary Submissions
Education Week takes no editorial positions, but publishes opinion essays and letters on pre-K-12 education from outside contributors in its Commentary section.
Aspiring contributors should write Commentary essays on issues that affect pre-K-12 education and are of interest to a broad range of people. Our diverse readership includes school administrators, policymakers, teachers, scholars, lawmakers, government officials, business leaders, professionals, parents, and community leaders.
Education Week receives a high volume of Commentary submissions, so the review process is often not immediate. To help ensure a timely review process, we ask that:
• Commentaries for submission be no longer than 1,000 words. There is no minimum length, and shorter essays are welcome.
• Commentaries for submission be emailed to [email protected] as Word attachments.
• You include a one- or two- sentence biography, your current professional position and related experience, a day-time telephone number, and email address.
• You provide sources of quotations and factual references for copy-editing purposes and to validate your statements.
• Submissions addressing a specific Education Week article or Commentary refer to the Letter to the Editor requirements.
The editors acknowledge receipt of all Commentary submissions by email once they have been processed. You will be notified separately only if your submission is under consideration for publication. Please note that we cannot provide frequent updates on the status of submitted pieces that are still under consideration. We discourage repeated messages regarding submissions, as they tend to slow down the deliberation process, so we ask that authors wait two weeks after submitting to check on the status of their essays.
With the exception of occasional specially commissioned essays, Education Week does not pay Commentary contributors.
All submissions accepted for publication are subject to editing for clarity, accuracy, length, and conformity to Education Week style. If substantive changes or fact-checking are required, the Commentary editors will contact the author. The editors will make minor revisions at their own discretion and without consultation with the author(s).
The Commentary editors will decide where an essay will be published (in the print edition of Education Week and/or online at edweek.org), as well as when it will run. We strongly discourage authors from submitting their essays to other publications until after they have appeared in Education Week or on edweek.org.
Authors retain the right, however, to publish their essays three business days after they have been featured on edweek.org's homepage. Any reprint requests from other publications will be referred to the writer(s).
On rare occasions, Education Week reprints articles, with permission, from other publications, but as a rule, we do not accept manuscripts that have been published or accepted elsewhere. Also, authors who have previously published with Education Week should wait at least six months before submitting again.

Letters to the Editor
We also welcome responses to past Commentary essays or to Education Week news articles in the form of letters to the editor. Guidelines for submitting a letter can be found here.
The editors of Education Week Teacher encourage submissions for the website's op-ed/personal essay section, "Teacher Voices." The website aims to challenge, provoke, connect, and entertain teachers. To do this, we'd like to hear from a variety of contributors.
In organization and tone, these pieces should take the form of opinion essays rather than scholarly papers, research reports, or lesson plans. Essays may touch on local or state issues but must not focus solely on regional matters. Submissions should describe a particularly meaningful or moving personal experience, discuss issues of teaching or education policy, or reflect on teaching methods or other pedagogic issues. These essays are generally school-related, and they are often light in tone. We do not print poetry or fiction.
Submissions should run between 800 and 1,200 words. If your essay is accepted, you will be contacted about its publication date by phone or email.
Essays may be submitted at any time. Please email submissions as Word attachments to [email protected]. Be sure to include all pertinent contact information, plus a two- to three-sentence biographical sketch giving any current professional position held and related experience. Education Week Teacher also accepts short pieces on successful classroom practices. Best Practices essays should be no longer than 1,000 words and should describe your experiences with an effective lesson plan idea or instructional method, along with tips for other teachers. Essays should be emailed to [email protected]. Please put the words "Best Practices" in the subject line and include all pertinent contact information, plus a two- to three-sentence biographical sketch.
