Legislative Action

Child CareHouse Education and Labor Committee hearings last week examined legislation

HR 3, HR 30to subsidize child care and increase its supply and quality.

Child NutritionThe House Elementary and Secondary Education Subcommittee last week began

HR 24work on the reauthorization of child-nutrition assistance with a hearing on the

Women, Infants, and Children program, which provides nutritional aid for

pregnant women and young children. Hearings are scheduled later this month on

the school-lunch program.

Family LeaveThe House Labor-Management Relations Subcomittee held a hearing last week

HR 770, S 345on the proposed “parental and medical leave act.” The bill would require employers

to grant workers unpaid leave to care for newborn or sick children.

Indian EducationThe Senate Select Committee on Indian Affairs and the House Interior and Insular

AppropriationsAffairs Committee held a joint hearing last week on the 1990 budget request for

Indian programs. The budget request proposed by President Reagan includes $74

million for the Education Department’s Indian programs and $270 million for

Bureau of Indian Affairs education programs.
