As instructional learning hurtles toward AI, educators are starting to question the relationship between math and technology.

In many ways, the two subjects are inextricably linked, but if educators aren’t careful, students could wind up becoming too reliant on artificial intelligence to the exclusion of developing strong—and necessary—math skills. How should the field be thinking about these subject areas?

Professor, Teacher Learning & Practice, Harvard Graduate School of Education

Heather C. Hill studies policies and programs designed to improve teacher and teaching quality, particularly in mathematics. Her recent research focuses on teacher learning and professional development, the quality of mathematics instruction, the effectiveness of different approaches to teacher education, and machine learning tools that automate the measurement of instruction and feedback to teachers.

Matthew Karabinos

6th grade Math, Science Teacher

Matthew Karabinos is a 6^th grade math and science teacher who helps educators integrate emerging AI technologies into their classrooms. He designs professional development, creates AI-driven instructional tools, and promotes ethical, student-centered use of AI. He is passionate about preparing both teachers and students for a future shaped by innovation and critical thinking.

Janel Vancas

Director, Curriculum Innovation, Appalachia Intermediate Unit 8

Janel Vancas is the Director of Curriculum Innovation at Appalachia Intermediate Unit 8. Her background includes special education, curriculum and instruction, and K–12 administration. She has spent her entire career in education—first as a teacher, then instructional coach, and now in educational leadership. She has spent that last 16 years of her career at IU8 and loves working for a state educational service agency.

Peter DeWitt

Opinion Contributor, Education Week

A former K-5 public school principal turned author, presenter, and leadership coach, Peter DeWitt provides insights and advice for education leaders. He pens an opinion blog for Education Week, Finding Common Ground and is the host of A Seat at the Table.
