The U.S. Department of Education announced the first awards under the Striving Readers initiative earlier this month. The grants will go to school districts in Chicago; Danville, Ky.; Multnomah County, Ore.; Newark, N.J.; San Diego; Springfield, Mass.; Memphis, Tenn.; and the Ohio Department of Youth Services.
