Eight school districts and a state agency will share $30 million in federal grants for the 2006-07 school year to build research-based strategies for improving literacy skills among middle and high school students. The U.S. Department of Education announced the first awards under the Striving Readers initiative earlier this month. The grants will go to school districts in Chicago; Danville, Ky.; Multnomah County, Ore.; Newark, N.J.; San Diego; Springfield, Mass.; Memphis, Tenn.; and the Ohio Department of Youth Services. President Bush is seeking to expand the program in his budget.
