Katherine K. Merseth

Harvard University’s graduate school of education has appointed Katherine K. Merseth, currently a senior lecturer at the school, as the new director of its teacher education program. Ms. Merseth, 55, who will begin her new position July 1, will be responsible for teaching and advising graduate school students, providing administrative leadership, and contributing to discussions about teacher education throughout the country.

Sylvan Learning Systems Inc. announced last month that Mary K. Foster has become the president of the Baltimore company’s Sylvan Learning Centers division. Before joining Sylvan, Ms. Foster, 46, was the senior vice president of sales and marketing for the Riverside Corp, a furniture company in Fort Smith, Ark. Ms. Foster is now in charge of the management team for the Sylvan Learning Centers division, which oversees nearly 850 centers nationwide that offer specialized academic tutoring for K-12 students.

Gary S. Mathews

Gary S. Mathews will be the new superintendent of the 22,000-student Rockwood school district, Missouri’s fourth-largest school system. Mr. Mathews, 47—who takes over the position July 1—is replacing John Oldani, 54, who will retire in June. Mr. Mathews is leaving his current job as the superintendent of the 54,000-student East Baton Rouge Parish system in Baton Rouge, La.

Jane A. Kendrick will become the acting president of the Mayerson Academy for Human Resource Development, based in Cincinnati, this month. Ms. Kendrick, 51, is the superintendent of the 10,300-student Anderson, Ind., school system and the president of the Indiana Urban Schools Association. She will continue in both of those positions while also serving as the president of the nonprofit academy, which provides training to school professionals.
