Teacher Preparation Opinion NCTQ Report Offers Glimpse into Teacher Effectiveness Policies
The National Council on Teacher Quality (NTCQ) recently released "State of the States 2012: Teacher Effectiveness Policies," which offers a glimpse into changes in K-12 teacher evaluation policy across the country this year. The brief builds off a similar report NTCQ completed in October 2011, "Trends and Early Lessons on Teacher Evaluation and Effectiveness Policies" that I discussed in a previous post. I also provided an update on educator evaluation legislation in January.

Douglas Harris' Value-Added Measures in Education is a masterpiece. Even in the places where I believe Harris is mistaken, he identifies the core issues involved in using value-added for evaluations.

Since I began writing this blog back in October, I have gotten several interesting questions and comments from readers via social media, email, and through comments on K-12 Talent Manager. On occasion, I plan to use this space to respond to these questions as a learning and engagement opportunity for talent managers and educators across the country.

Standards & Accountability Opinion Stephen Krashen: Testing and Teaching to the Test: It's going to get Worse
Guest post by Stephen Krashen
Phillip K. Howard tells us that "To fix America's bureaucracy, we need to destroy it." The part most in need of destruction is not yet fully grown: The new national standards and their spawn, the new national tests. Howard points out that NCLB (No Child Left Behind) and its emphasis on standardized test scores has made it very hard for teachers to be creative and deal with children as individuals. Teaching has been reduced to "teaching to the test."
