Portland, Ore.'s teachers have overwhelmingly passed a strike vote, and are scheduled to walk off the job Feb. 20, if negotiations with the district aren’t concluded by then, reports the Oregonian.
Issues on the table include teaching loads, salaries, and layoff procedures, according to a great backgrounder from the newspaper, which you can find here.
Meanwhile, 275 miles to the south, teachers in the Medford, Ore., school district began picketing yesterday in a strike expected to last at least through Feb. 11. Teachers have been working without a contract for a year, and while details on the proposals and counterproposals are still sketchy, you can see what the district says is its most recent offer on its website.
Just 12 states, Oregon among them, permit teachers to strike, according to the National Council on Teacher Quality.
