I previously wrote about a key to teachers getting a desired response from students: giving them a compelling reason for doing something rather than just telling them to do something. And the same is true for instructional coaches and supervisors when working with teachers. Don’t just focus on what and how teachers need to change. Create buy-in by explaining why they need to change in order for students to learn and grow to their potential.
This is where coaching becomes teaching, as legendary football coach Vince Lombardi noted in the quote above and as you’ll see in this clip from a conference where I helped a teacher shift from sage on the stage to guide on the side.
