By a substantial margin (69 to 31 percent), Arizona voters rejected Proposition 302, which would have returned a tobacco tax set aside for early education to the state’s general fund.
In Tennessee, Republican candidate Bill Haslam defeated Democrat Mike McWherter. The candidates had squabbled about support for state-funded pre-K, an issue popular with Tennessee voters.
