How We Should Move Forward After the Abuse at Spring Valley High
I teach my students to be "upstanders" when they are witness to violence, and in that spirit I want to express solidarity with those educators and activists speaking out against the assault of a black student at Spring Valley High in South Carolina by school resource officer Ben Fields.

Certification, Genuine Teacher Leadership, and Power Struggles
When authentic, experienced teacher leaders step out of their boxes to speak about education issues, they always run the risk of stepping on the toes--or in the limelight--of someone above them in the pecking order. Simply expressing a widely shared viewpoint feels like subordination to some school leaders. When teachers have a national platform and thousands of readers or fans--when their voice and leadership are elevated--they become a threat.

Our Union-Based Reform Movement
These innovations are possible thanks to our school's membership in the Progressive Redesign Opportunity Schools for Excellence (PROSE) program created in the UFT agreement with the city and the Department of Education.
PROSE allows us to revise aspects of the Chancellor's Regulations and the UFT contract, enabling us to apply creative thinking and approach our students' problems in more effective ways.

Who Has the Most Important Role in the District?
None of us will succeed without the other and students will be the losers if we fail to remember what brought us this far.

Is There Time to Lead Change Well?
Time is better spent up front creating an environment in which the new initiative is recognized as being valuable, building the coalition to lead with you, sharing the vision generously for all to own, designing a clear-cut strategy, and creating the environment that invites broad-based action, recognizes short-term "wins," and sustains the movement.

Mr. Broad, Charters Aren't the Only Answer for LAUSD
If I were Eli Broad, I would go into those schools and say to those teachers, "Let's work together to create a school that you would be proud to teach at and that students would love to attend."

Dangerous Ideas in Teacher Leadership
Two ideas that I find pervasive and problematic in the conversation about teacher leadership: 1. The goal of teacher leadership is NOT to make principals' jobs easier. 2. Valuing teacher leadership means valuing teachers.

Two Things Policymakers Should Know About Teacher Leadership
Teacher leadership is the new hot topic in ed policy circles. It's in the blogosphere, it's supported by groups across the edu-political landscape, and Arne Duncan frequently talks about it. I have gotten at least 30 emails since August with the phrase "teacher leadership" in either the subject or body. But what are all these people talking about? What will all this talk mean for my career and the careers of my colleagues?

Ideas for Tackling the Teacher Shortage
A mid-western farmer's daughter raised me, and she had a proverb for everything. But my personal favorite, and one that she repeated to me time and time again when I became a teacher is, "You can catch more flies with honey than you can with vinegar." In other words we all respond better to praise than we do criticism. I think the same thing can be said when looking at a looming teacher shortage.

Another Argument for Acting Like Finland
Perhaps if we were to give teachers the training and the autonomy like Finnish teachers get, we would see less of a need for standardized testing and more authentic assessment happening.

Local Association President: We Teachers Are Far From Mediocre!
The teachers' union helped us to obtain a living wage by doing what we do best; teach. It is not a perfect entity. It is made up of fallible parts. However, we each contribute the best of what we can--and that is what has made us strong advocates for our students and this educational system.

Death, Taxes, and Union Dues: We All Have to Pay Our Due
If a state chooses to have public employees represented through a collective bargaining process doesn't this automatically justify the necessity for public employee unions in the interest of the public good.
