West Virginia’s state schools chief, Steven Paine, is going to work for publishing giant CTB/McGraw-Hill, the company announced today.
Paine had said in October that he would resign as the state superintendent, effective in January.
As superintendent, Paine oversaw West Virginia’s efforts to integrate analytical and critical-thinking skills into its academic standards. He also sought to align the use of classroom technology and teacher training with the state’s standards, among other steps.
CTB/McGraw-Hill works in all 50 states and 46 countries. Paine will serve as the company’s vice president of Strategic Planning and Business Development, and will focus on “enhancing market positioning of CTB’s assessment solutions and promoting business growth through industry outreach, strategic planning, and relationships with key stakeholders,” the company says. The West Virginian is familiar with testing issues. He serves on the National Assessment Governing Board, which sets policy for the National Assessment of Educational Progress, test, and he is involved in policy across states through his work with the Council of Chief State School Officers.
