Over at Inside School Research, my colleague Debbie Viadero reports that the federal Institute of Education Sciences is awarding $100 million to six teams of researchers for a new initiative to promote reading comprehension from preschool to high school.
The grants, to be spread over five years among 130 researchers in a variety of fields, from linguistics and reading to developmental psychology, are the largest ever awarded by the institute’s National Center on Education Research for a single research program, IES Director John Q. Easton told Debbie. The IES is the research arm of the U.S. Department of Education.
The federal funding will help create a new Reading for Understanding Network. The researchers will be required to work with teachers and other practitioners on the ground level, as well as with one another, to try to find proven, practical solutions to the thorny problem of improving reading comprehension.
