A bill introduced in Congress would repeal federal rules that reduce Social Security benefits for public school teachers and municipal workers in 13 states.
Under the current rules involving so-called government-pension offsets, the Social Security benefits are reduced for private-sector employees who start second careers as teachers, firefighters, police officers, or other civil servants.
The bill, introduced last week by Reps. Howard P. “Buck” McKeon, R-Calif., and Howard Berman, D-Calif., would revoke that rule so that second-career teachers would not lose Social Security benefits.
