Michigan State University is working to expand its activities to improve math and science education through the creation of a new research center, the institution announced this week.
The Institute for Research on Mathematics and Science Education will bring together “top scholars” from the science and education fields and facilitate projects to tackle challenges in math and science learning from kindergarten through the college level, according to a press release.
“This institute provides support for collaborative work and increases it to a larger scale,” William Schmidt, an education professor at Michigan State and the institute’s interim director, said in the press release. “We know it’s really important for students to receive a strong foundation in math and science, and this is about the research needed to accomplish that.”
Initial research affiliated with the institute will focus on math, biology, and physics in grades 7-12 and the first years of college.
