Howard University in Washington and AASA, the School Superintendents Association, will host a conference Friday and Saturday, Aug.28-29, to kick off their program to train the next generation of leaders for the nation’s urban school districts.
Pedro Noguera, a professor of education at the Graduate School of Education and Information at UCLA and the director of the Metropolitan Center for Urban Education at New York University; Jack Naglieri, a research professor at the Curry School of Education at the University of Virginia; Leslie Fenwick, dean of the Howard University School of Education; and Daniel Domenech, AASA’s executive director, will address the two-day inaugural Howard/AASA Urban Superintendents Academy conference.

The partnership between the historically black college and the Alexandria, Va.-based organization will provide participants with: mentors, who are current and former urban superintendents; coursework options at Howard for those interested in pursuing a doctoral degree; a center for research and discussion about urban school districts; career counseling and coaching; internships and field experiences; and national seminars and conferences.
The AASA is also teaming up with the University of Southern California’s Rossier School of Education to host an urban superintendents academy on the West Coast.
