Denver Public Schools Assistant Superintendent Antwan Wilson will be the new superintendent of Oakland Unified School District.

The local school board approved his four-year contract, with a $280,000 salary, this week, according to sfgate.com.

Wilson, 42, will step into the lead administrative position of the 37,000-student district on July 1, and will replace interim superintendent Gary Yee.

In Denver—a district of about 87,000 students —Wilson served as assistant superintendent for postsecondary readiness, overseeing the district’s middle and high schools and college readiness.

Wilson has been lauded for his turnaround efforts in Denver. Oakland Local details some of the challenges (declining enrollment, closing the achievement gap, and a shortage of Latino teachers) that he faces when he gets to Oakland.
