COVID-19's Fiscal Shadow: What It Means for the Nation's Most-Vulnerable Schools

The pandemic that shuttered the nation’s schoolhouses and has disrupted K-12 education for more than a year also cast massive uncertainty over the funding that sustains every aspect of their operations. That uncertainty poses a keen threat to the chronically under-resourced schools that serve millions of the nation’s poorest students, many of them in communities of color.

Education Week Assistant Managing Editor Daarel Burnette II, with support from an Education Writers Association Reporting Fellowship, examines the impact of these pressures and the underlying forces that put these districts in such a vulnerable position.
