A new book published by Jossey-Bass includes information about how to implement Response to Intervention with English-language learners, according to a description of the book by the publisher. Response to Intervention, or RTI, is an approach to meeting the needs of struggling students with various interventions in the regular classroom before anyone takes the step to evaluate them for special education.
The book, How to Teach English Language Learners, profiles eight teachers at elementary schools, most of whom work with the RTI framework.
A few researchers who specialize in English-language learners are starting to focus on how RTI can best be applied to such students. I have plans to report in the next few months in the pages of Education Week about how this approach is working out at the classroom level.
