Title IX, the federal legislation requiring schools that receive federal funding to provide equal athletic and educational opportunities to males and females, officially goes over the hill and turns 40 on June 23.
In honor of the anniversary, none other than Secretary of Education Arne Duncan will be “tweeting-up” tomorrow at 4 p.m. ET to answer questions about the legislation. The event is being hosted by the American Association of University Women.
Russlynn Ali, the assistant secretary for civil rights at the Dept. of Ed., and Lisa Maatz, the AAUW’s director of public policy and government relations, will also be available to answer questions.
To submit a question to Duncan, you can: comment on the AAUW’s blog post about the tweet-up; comment on the AAUW’s Facebook page, or use the hashtag #T9Talk on Twitter.
Equity questions regarding athletics, STEM education, and sexual harassment will be given “priority consideration,” according to the AAUW’s blog post about the event.
The AAUW doesn’t specify whether it will be retweeting Duncan’s questions and answers. If it doesn’t, you can still follow the conversation by visiting Duncan’s Twitter page.
For those who can’t watch tomorrow’s conversation unfold on Twitter, the Dept. of Ed. will be streaming the event live, too. (UPDATE, 1/6, 10:00 a.m.: As it turns out, a livestream won’t be provided. But you can still follow along with the conversation on Twitter.)
This isn’t Duncan’s first time doing a Twitter Q&A session. By our count, he’s done two Twitter Town Halls in the past six months. John White, the Dept. of Ed.'s deputy secretary for rural outreach, also took to Twitter for an online town hall in August.
I’ll be out of the office tomorrow, but I’m planning on reading through Duncan’s Q&A session and updating you with the highlights on Monday.
