What’s going on with ordinary people in the Middle East taking to the streets and calling for changes in their governments is providing not only a “teachable moment” but rather a teachable month. For weeks now, I’ve been following the news stories, reported in the Washington Post, about the protests in Tunisia, Egypt, and Jordan. Recently, Iran, Yemen and Bahrain are also in the news.
For those of you who want to infuse information about the current events into your lessons, Larry Ferlazzo, a social studies and English teacher for English-language learners and other students in Sacramento, Calif., has put together a list of resources, which he calls “The Best Resources to See Who Might Fall Next After Mubarak.”
Michelle D. Anderson, a reporter here at EdWeek, has written a story about how teachers across the country are using the recent upheaval in the Middle East as an opportunity for students to learn more about Egypt than simply it’s a country with pyramids and mummies.
