Miguel Cardona is sworn in as U.S. secretary of education by Vice President Kamala Harris last week. The former Connecticut schools chief, teacher, and principal grew up in public housing and learned English as a second language, experiences that reflect the evolving demographics in America’s public schools. He takes over from Betsy DeVos, who had no background as an educator.
