Did any states see major improvements in K-12 education during the terms of the nine governors and former governors now running for president?

An apples-to-apples comparison of selected indicators doesn’t show any big standouts, according to an analysis by the Education Week Research Center. The analysis looked at 4th and 8th grade reading and math scores on the National Assessment of Educational Progress, as well as graduation rates as measured by the Averaged Freshman Graduation Rate. It also looked at state’s grades on the Research Center’s Quality Counts K-12 Achievement Index, which includes 18 indicators aiming to capture strong academic performance, combined with improvements over time and a narrowing of the achievement gap.
