I expect many of you have already heard that Apple unveiled a new product yesterday: the iPad mini.
As Jason Tomassini wrote at length in edweek.org’s Marketplace K-12 blog yesterday, iPad sales in K-12 schools are booming and the new iPad mini has a lower price point to go with the variety of education-related uses that the iPad is already known for.
During the live event yesterday, Cook introduced the new iPad mini by talking up its potential for schools, mentioning that 80 percent of the nation’s “core curricula” is available in Apple’s digital bookstore iBooks, Tomassini reported. Although the announced price points for the iPad mini are higher than had been rumored—leaving space for competitors to undercut the prices—they are much lower than the price of standard-sized iPads, making them even more attractive to budget-strapped districts.
