Along with Jamal Abedi, a professor of education at the University of California, Davis, the SMARTER Balanced Assessment Consortium has another technical adviser who specializes in assessment of English-language learners, a blog reader informed me. Edynn Y. Sato, the director of research and ELL assessment at WestEd, is an adviser to the accessibility and accommodations work group for the SMARTER Balanced consortium. WestEd is a research and development nonprofit organization that has done a lot of important work over the last decade in supporting schools and states to improve the education of English-language learners. That’s good news for this group of students that Sato is also on board.
