This video published today on edweek.org is a companion to my story on the rise in dual-language programs. The piece was shot by Manny Crisostomo, a great photographer and former colleague whom I worked with years ago at The Sacramento Bee.

Manny’s video takes you inside the lively, language-filled classrooms at Gardner Academy in downtown San Jose, Calif., where you can see native Spanish speakers and native English speakers learning together through music, visuals, and lots of conversation.

You will also hear from Jill Fraka, the facilitator of the Sobrato Early Academic Language, or SEAL, program at Gardner, who talks about the promising results that this now three-year-old two-way immersion approach is showing in early literacy, as well as family engagement in literacy activities outside the school day.
