A South Korean documentary examining education across the globe will include a segment about the Parent University program in Grand Rapids, Mich.
YoungJin Uh, U.S. coordinator of the Korean Broadcasting System, told MLive.com that the film will explore how parents educate and develop relationships with their children. Tentatively titled “Education Around the World,” the film, which also features families from Israel and South Korea, will be broadcast in South Korea this spring.
According to the story, Grand Rapids Public Schools launched its Parent University program last fall to teach parents and guardians how to support and advocate for children in school through a series of courses with topics ranging from homework to the transition to middle school. More than 400 parents and community members have enrolled in the courses since its inception.
“It is a good example of what American parents are willing to do to improve for their child’s education,” Uh told MLive.com.
Grand Rapids parents were filmed and interviewed last month during a parent university session. While Parent University programs can be found in states such as California and Florida, Grand Rapids has the only program in Michigan, according to the article.
