Before the NBA playoffs get underway this weekend, one member of the Miami Heat had another order of business to handle: donating laptops to a school recently struck by thievery.
Back on April 9, thieves took 16 laptops and a wireless cart worth $24,000 from North Side Elementary School in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., according to the South Florida Sun Sentinel. They also stole the tools that the English-learners used to reach English-language proficiency.
On Tuesday, James Jones of the Heat visited the school with 16 replacement laptops in hand.
“Out of tragedy comes something beautiful,” Jones said about the donation, according to a photo from the team’s official Instagram account. (Here’s another photo of Jones and the students with laptops in hand.)
The Heat partnered up with Kia Motors and electronic retailer Tiger Direct to purchase the replacement laptops for the students.
“We’re appreciative that the Miami Heat is supporting us,” said principal Camille LaChance to the Sun Sentinel. “It brought me to tears.”
Jones isn’t the only Heat member who recently helped students out with their technological needs. Last month, Heat guard and Chicago native Dwyane Wade donated 20 iPads and $75,000 for an iPad reading lab to the “By the Hand Club for Kids” in Chicago.
