The federal Government Accountability Office is calling for more oversight for 21st Century Community Learning Centers.
We’ve written a lot about 21st CCLCs recently since President Donald Trump released his proposed budget that called for eliminating the program, which provides after-school and summer learning opportunities for students in low-income communities.
Trump’s proposal was roundly criticized by after-school program advocates such as the Afterschool Alliance, STEM Next, and some members of Congress, who argued that the program provides much-needed support for students and their parents.
Now a new GAO report entitled, “Education Needs to Improve Oversight of Its 21st Century Program,” is raising questions about the how much the U.S. Department of Education knows about the effectiveness of the program.
To learn more about the report and read reaction from Afterschool Alliance, check out this story by my colleague Andrew Ujifusa.
