Good Read: The Life of One Student in ‘Stand and Deliver’

Washington Post education columnist Jay Mathews tells what happened to Ana Delgado, the only teenage character in “Stand and Deliver” who was based on a real-life person. The movie was about Jaime Escalante, a math teacher at Garfield High School in East L.A., who passed away last week.

Ana Delgado’s real name is Leticia Rodriguez, and she didn’t learn English until the 2nd grade, Mathews says, in an opinion piece published in the Los Angeles Times over the weekend. For full disclosure, Mathews is a board member of EdWeek‘s parent organization.
