Guess who is being honored with a portrait on Sweden’s new 20 kronor note? The author of the famed Pippi Longstocking books, Astrid Lindgren.
The General Council of Sveriges Riksbank held a competition for the design of the new currency, which graphic designer and engraver Göran Österlund won with his proposal of the theme “Kulturresan/Cultural journey.”
It’s lovely to see a children’s writer being honored in such a fashion, especially one that created a character that is so beloved by so many (including my elementary-school self). Lindgren sold 145 million copies of her books worldwide, according to the Penguin Press, which makes this an honor that is particularly well-deserved.
The new banknote will enter circulation in October 2015.
