Training Initiative: The National Education Association has announced that teacher training programs in Kentucky, Maine, and Tennessee will be part of the NEA Teacher Education Initiative, a new union project designed to upgrade preparation. Each program will receive a link to the NEA's computer network, a $5,000 grant, and staff support from the union. The chosen programs are the University of Southern Maine's Extended Teacher Education Program; a mentor- oriented training program designed and implemented by the Tennessee NEA affiliate and three universities in the state; and a collaborative effort to establish an alternative-licensing program in Kentucky.
