Too Much Work: A report by the Chicago-based National Safe Workplace Institute, based in part on a survey of Illinois high school guidance counselors, found that after-school work contributes to high rates of absenteeism and low grades. The study also found that "thousands'' of teenagers in Illinois are illegally employed, often in unsafe workplaces.

Easing Racial Tension: A New York City education group awarded $30,000 to seven schools for their efforts to reduce racial and ethnic tensions among youths in their schools and communities. Among the winners of the New York Alliance for the Public Schools' Harmony Awards was a conflictresolution effort led by three schools in the city's Bensonhurst area, scene of a racially motivated killing and angry demonstrations. The awards program was funded by the Revlon Foundation.
