Corrected: An earlier version of this story misidentified James B. Milliken. He is the president of the University of Nebraska, a system with campuses in Lincoln, Omaha, and Kearney.
Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings announced last week that she plans to lead a delegation of eight college and university presidents to Chile and Brazil. The tour, which is scheduled for Aug. 18-24, will emphasize the importance of partnerships between U.S. postsecondary institutions and foreign colleges. Such partnerships can facilitate study-abroad programs.
Officials from the Department of State, including Thomas Farrell, the deputy assistant secretary for academic programs, and Department of Education officials, including Undersecretary Sara Martinez Tucker, will join Ms. Spellings on the trip. The college presidents scheduled to join the federal officials include John Hennessy, of Stanford University, and James B. Milliken, of the University of Nebraska.
This isn’t the first time Ms. Spellings has gone abroad to promote higher education partnerships. Last November, she led 12 U.S. college presidents on a similar tour of China, Japan, and South Korea. (“Spellings Takes College Leaders to the Far East,” Nov. 15, 2006.)
