Judge Denies Request to Halt K.C. Transfers

A Jackson County, Mo., judge has denied a request from six suburban Kansas City school districts to temporarily halt the transfer of students from the 17,400-student Kansas City district, which lost its accreditation this month.

The districts—Independence, Raytown, North Kansas City, Lee’s Summit, Blue Springs, and Center Schools—asked for a temporary restraining order to delay transfers until a number of disputes can be resolved.

Among those are the amount of tuition the Kansas City district will pay for its students to transfer, when those payments will be made, and who will be responsible for transporting the students to and from the city’s urban core.

The Kansas City Star reported that Circuit Judge W. Brent Powell denied the request, but said his ruling does not affect the plaintiffs’ other requests for relief. A hearing was scheduled for Jan. 12 on the core arguments.
