Planning Period? What’s a Planning Period?

By Liana Loewus — November 08, 2010 1 min read

Budget cuts are hitting Hobo Teacher‘s district anew.

The latest rumor floating around is that the district is going to reduce the number of subs we use. The thinking behind such a move is that we're paying people to serve as a substitute for a teacher who is out for a day, but we already have a school full of teachers getting paid. So what you do is just get one of those teachers during their conference period to handle the class....So much for working like a madman during my planning period so I can get out of here at a decent time (if 6:30 in the evening is a decent time).

Many other districts have been taking this cost-cutting measure for a while now. And Hobo Teacher is worried it’s just the tip of the iceberg.

What's next? Are they going to demand even more of our time no matter the hour? They'll probably wake us up in the middle of the night like the drill sergeants do at boot camp.

Has your district slashed its use of subs? Who do you think is hurt the most by this type of cutback?
