Jim Knight is an instructional-leadership researcher, with a big following of instructional coaches. Knight and DeWitt will discuss the often-complicated duties of instructional coaches. For many teachers, coaches are a helpful resource who can make a real difference to their practice, but for others, they are simply compliance officers. Keeping these challenges in mind, the two will discuss how instructional coaches can best help teachers navigate their way through remote, hybrid, and in-person teaching to create a better and more meaningful classroom experience for their students.

DeWitt was a K-5 teacher for 11 years and a principal for eight. He is an independent researcher who runs competency-based workshops nationally and internationally with a focus on school leadership, collaborative cultures, instructional leadership, and inclusive school climates. His work has been adopted at the state and university levels, and he works with school districts, school boards, regional networks, and ministries of education across North America, Australia, Scandinavia, and the United Kingdom. He is also Visible Learning Trainer who works with John Hattie.

In 2020, DeWitt created the Educational Leadership Collective—a team of women and men from the United States and Canada who focus on all aspects of school leadership, including instructional leadership, instructional coaching, equity, and marginalized populations, as well as how to build collective efficacy.

DeWitt is the author of seven books, including Instructional Leadership: Creating Practice Out of Theory (Corwin, 2020).

Jim Knight

Jim Knight serves as Senior Partner of Instructional Coaching Group (ICG), is a research associate at the University of Kansas Center for Research on Learning. He has spent more than two decades studying professional learning and instructional coaching. Jim earned his Ph.D. in Education from the University of Kansas and has won several university teaching, innovation, and service awards.

The pioneering work Jim and his colleagues have conducted has led to many innovations that are now central parts of professional development in schools. Jim wrote the first major article about instructional coaching, for the Journal of Staff Development, and his book Instructional Coaching (2007) offered the first extended description of instructional coaching. Jim’s book Focus on Teaching (2014) was the first book to describe how video should be used for professional learning. Recently, writing with Ann Hoffman, Michelle Harris, and Sharon Thomas, Jim introduced the idea of instructional playbooks with their book on that topic.

Jim has written several other books in addition to those described above, including Unmistakable Impact (2011), High-Impact Instruction (2013), Better Conversations (2015), and The Impact Cycle (2018). Knight has also authored articles on instructional coaching and professional learning in publications such as Educational Leadership, The Journal of Staff Development, Principal Leadership, The School Administrator, and Kappan. Through ICG, Jim writes for the Radical Learners blog, conducts workshops, hosts the Facebook Live Program Coaching Conversations, and provides consulting for coaching programs around the world.
