Principals are experiencing high levels of stress and anxiety as they navigate what likely will be the most challenging year of their careers. Making decisions that affect their students and their school communities in the midst of the pandemic is anything but simple. Psychologists Mark Greenberg of Penn State University and Marc Brackett of Yale University have each been studying the emotional impact of the pandemic on school leaders. Sharif El-Mekki, a former school leader, will provide insights on the importance of training, hiring, and retaining quality educators, including educators of color. Join Peter DeWitt as he speaks with them to discuss their research and how principals can best manage their social-emotional needs, even as they are navigating the needs of their school communities.

DeWitt was a K-5 teacher for 11 years and a principal for eight. He is an independent researcher who runs competency-based workshops nationally and internationally with a focus on school leadership, collaborative cultures, instructional leadership, and inclusive school climates. His work has been adopted at the state and university levels, and he works with school districts, school boards, regional networks, and ministries of education across North America, Australia, Scandinavia, and the United Kingdom. He is also Visible Learning Trainer who works with John Hattie.

In 2020, DeWitt created the Educational Leadership Collective—a team of women and men from the United States and Canada who focus on all aspects of school leadership, including instructional leadership, instructional coaching, equity, and marginalized populations, as well as how to build collective efficacy.

DeWitt is the author of seven books, including Instructional Leadership: Creating Practice Out of Theory (Corwin, 2020).

Marc Brackett
Professor and Director, Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence

Brackett is the founding director of the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence and a professor in the Child Study Center at Yale University. His research focuses on the role of emotional intelligence in learning, decision making, creativity, relationships, health, and performance. He has published over 150 scholarly articles, received numerous awards, and serves on a number of boards, including CASEL. Marc is the lead developer of RULER, an evidence-based approach to SEL that has been adopted by over 2,500 schools across the United States and in other countries. Marc is the author of Permission to Feel, published by Celadon, a division of Macmillan.

Sharif El-Mekki
Founder and CEO, Center for Black Educator Development

El-Mekki, a former school leader and teacher, is the founder and CEO of the Center for Black Educator Development. The Center’s mission is to increase educator diversity through equity in training, hiring, and retention so that schools can reflect the students they serve. He is a contributor to Education Week’s advice column for principals, The Principal Is In.

Mark Greenberg
Emeritus Professor and Director, Penn State University

Greenberg is the Emeritus Bennett Chair of Prevention Science in Penn State's College of Health and Human Development and the founding director of the Prevention Research Center for the Promotion of Human Development. He has written more than 350 journal articles and book chapters on the development of well-being, learning, and the effects of prevention efforts on children and families.
